PMTCT (PREVENTION MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION OF HIV), Cambodia

Name: PMTCT (Prevention mother to child transmission of HIV)
Location: Asia / Cambodia

Project Area Background:

Cambodia is one of the five most severely HIV/AIDS affected countries in Asia-Pacific region with an estimated HIV prevalence rate of 2.6%. In the last several years the HIV infection has become less concentrated in high risk groups and entered the general population. Magna is attempting to substantially lower the risk of HIV virus transmission from HIV-positive pregnant women to their infants by introducing, administering and/or overseeing ante-natal, intrapartum and postnatal intervention practices in the form of a) ante natal care, b) antiretroviral prophylaxis upon child delivery, c) obstetric practices oversight and d) avoidance of breast feeding. Since an HIV-infected mother’s breast milk contains the virus, she unknowingly infects her newborn as soon as she starts breast feeding.

Project Description:

Reduce the amount of newborns infected with HIV/AIDS through mother-to-child HIV transmission. Operate an HIV intervention program from a pre-selected health care facility in this region.

Project Goals:

• Operate an HIV intervention program in Cambodia that focuses on reducing cases through antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal mother-to-child HIV transmission.
• Purchase and distribute formula milk to replace HIV-infected breast milk.
• Give formula milk free of charge to 200 pre-selected newborns beginning at 4 hours after birth.
• Continue to distribute and administer milk to these babies until 12 months old.
