THUSHANG-TPUMANI CENTER, SOUTH AFRICA

Limpopo Province, South Africa

In June 2008, Pia Garcia, Sunflower Children of Southern Africa Coordinator, returned to the Limpopo Province in the northern part of this country to review the completion of the first Sunflower of Southern Africa project – the Thushang-Tpumani Center. Here Pia gives an overview of her trip and a report on the center.

Pia writes:
“Thanks to the generous contributions of individuals, we were able to rebuild this center for mentally handicapped children who were suffering from terrible accommodations with no running water, electricity or a kitchen to prepare food. Most importantly, the children were subject to sexual predators and the center was in dire need of fencing and a security guard.
When I visited, the bore hole was being installed, the electricity being connected, and the compound was a newly planted vegetable garden and an array of flowers, which infused the center with new life and a source of nourishment.
Sunflower is also funding the center’s operating costs, which will provide much needed training to the caregivers as well as a functioning office, imperative for managing the services effectively. And best of all, 100% of the funds from our generous donors are going directly to the children – as all of my travel and time to review, oversee and report on the renovation of this center have been contributed pro bono."
